Sunfish Pond is a 44-acre glacial lake on New Jersey’s Kittatinny Ridge, known as the southernmost glacial tarn along the Appalachian Trail and a prominent backcountry stop within a rugged forested landscape. Formed by the Wisconsin Glacier, it is surrounded by hardwood forest and notable shore vegetation. The area was once part of Charles C. Worthington’s deer preserve, but a 1965 reservoir proposal threatened to flood the pond. Local protests led by Casey Kays helped win donation of the land to the state in 1966. The preservation campaign drew national notice, and in 1970 the lake was designated a National Natural Landmark.
