White and Company's Goose Lake Tile Works, near Morris, Illinois, preserves part of a large industrial plant that made both stoneware and tile from 1855 to 1865. Built where abundant clay was available around Goose Lake, it was among Illinois's earliest large-scale drainage tile operations. Although the buildings no longer stand, the ground still holds evidence of the industry, especially tile fragments and kiln furniture left from production. The plant supported the nearby settlement of Jugtown, whose population reached 114 by 1860. The site is important for showing how natural resources, manufacturing, and settlement were closely linked in early industrial Illinois.
