Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands centers on the Youghiogheny River gorge and is renowned for whitewater, waterfalls, trails, and forested ravines. Opened to the public in 1965 and dedicated in 1971, it includes landmarks such as Ohiopyle Falls, Cucumber Falls, the Meadow Run Waterslides, and Ferncliff Peninsula, whose sheltered microclimate supports unusual plant life. Its name comes from a Lenape phrase meaning “it turns very white,” referring to the falls’ froth. Long inhabited by Native peoples, the area later grew through lumbering, railroads, and a resort era before becoming a major state park and recreation destination.
