Appomattox County covers 342 square miles and was formed in 1845 from Buckingham, Prince Edward, Charlotte, and Campbell counties, taking its name from an Indian tribe; this county was the scene of Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865. Prince Edward County covers 356 square miles and was formed in 1753 from Amelia County, taking its name from Prince Edward, son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and younger brother of King George III; General Joseph E. Johnston was born there, and Hampden-Sidney College is located in the county.
