Grand Scenic Divide is a 5,667-foot ridge in the Grand Canyon of northern Arizona, rising more than 3,400 feet above the Colorado River between Bass Canyon and Serpentine Canyon. Its significance lies in marking a major change in the canyon’s form and geology: eastward, isolated towers, buttes, temples, and branching side canyons are common, while westward these features become much rarer as granite disappears from the inner gorge and the river cuts only sedimentary rock. The ridge exposes several major rock units, is usually reached by the South Bass Trail, and its name, applied by William Wallace Bass, was officially adopted in 1932.
