Evans Butte is a prominent 6,379-foot landform in a rugged part of the northern Arizona Grand Canyon, rising sharply above the Colorado River and exposing major rock layers including the Supai Group, Redwall Limestone, and Tonto Group. Named for U.S. Geological Survey engineer Richard Tranter Evans, who surveyed and mapped this area in 1904 and helped establish its Arthurian place-names, it reflects both the canyon’s dramatic geology and its mapping history. The name was officially adopted in 1969. The summit also holds climbing significance as Harvey Butchart’s first recorded ascent there on October 11, 1976, one of his many Grand Canyon summit climbs.
