Double T State Fish and Wildlife Area is a one thousand nine hundred sixty-one-acre Illinois refuge in Fulton County near Canton, on land once strip mined for coal. Acquired by the state in September 2001, it has undergone remediation and habitat restoration under the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to improve wildlife habitat. The area is managed largely for hunting, especially ducks, geese, and mourning doves. It also includes sixty-four-acre Double T Lake, a fishing lake created by a nineteen eighty-three strip-mine excavation and managed for largemouth bass, with carp and gizzard shad as well. The lake’s distinctive double-T, or pi-shaped, outline gave the area its name.
