In the crucial battle of the Chattanooga campaign on Nov. 25, 1863, Capt. John C. Wilson and five others from Estill Co., of the 8th Ky. Inf., answered a call for volunteers to plant the U.S. flag on Lookout Mtn. Reaching the summit in sight of both armies, they planted their colors, made by Estill Co. women. The regiment followed, taking the mountain. His grave is at Station Camp Cem., four miles S.W.
