These surplus guns, though of like manufacture, are not identical. Cast circa 1770 by the Carron Ironworks of Falkirk, Scotland, for the Royal Navy, they were donated by the U.S. Government to the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) Post #259 in 1900 and dedicated to the court house. One gun has sustained significant marine encrustation from long submergence in sea water, most likely along the U.S. Atlantic Coast. These cannons may very well have been used against American forces during the Revolutionary War.
