Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area in Starke County, Indiana, protects wetlands, woodlands, farmland, and uplands at the junction of the Yellow and Kankakee rivers. It preserves part of the former Grand Kankakee Marsh, once renowned for immense waterfowl concentrations along major bird flyways. State acquisitions beginning in the 1920s, followed by Great Depression work by the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps, expanded and restored habitat here and at Jasper-Pulaski. The preserve later grew through additional land purchases and became a managed fish-and-wildlife property supporting migratory birds, hunting, fishing, and ongoing waterfowl management as one of North America’s enduring marsh remnants.
