Water Mill honors local service members from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as those in World War II Special Services Merchant Marine, American Field Service, and the Cadet Nurse corps, naming those who served and identifying some with symbols for those killed in action. The grinding stones on which these tablets are placed were used in the old water mill erected in 1643 by Edward Howell to serve the Southampton Colony, and those stones were cut from rock found on Long Island.
