Built in 1906 by Edward Jacob and Georgia Ophelia Stokes, this one-story frame house reflects a residential style popular in northern Florida between 1880 and 1910 through its Queen Anne Cottage elements, including a flat hip roof, a cross-gable, front-facing gables, bay windows, and a veranda. Its double hung windows, drop siding, and masonry chimneys made from distinctive light and pinkish-gray brick supplied by Chipley's local brick factory further define the structure, which has retained most of its architectural integrity with few alterations. E.J. Stokes, born in 1850 in Charlton County, Georgia, moved to Florida at the turn of the 20th century and became a pioneer settler in Washington County and a naval stores merchant in the local turpentine business. For years, the Stokes family informally hosted visitors traveling through Chipley, and the house reflects the prosperity that naval stores brought to the area in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when Chipley was regarded as the world's largest inland shipping center for naval stores.
