Named for Henry Cunningham, the Cunningham House was owned by the Cunningham family from the time it was built in the early nineteenth century until 1976, when it was purchased by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The original building was a two-pen structure, two stories high, with a breezeway in the middle, a stone chimney at each end, and hand-hewn stone fireplaces. This construction suggests that the house was originally of the dogtrot type, which was more common in the Deep South. Modifications over the years included clapboard siding, a porch, and a frame addition on the back of the house.
