Albany Pine Bush is a protected inland pine barrens landscape between Albany and Schenectady, formed after Glacial Lake Albany drained thousands of years ago. Once part of a much larger sandy plain, it shaped travel and settlement between the Hudson and Mohawk valleys, from Native American presence around 10,000 years ago through Dutch trade at Fort Orange and later roads, turnpikes, and railroads. Development, waterworks, highways, campuses, and landfill fragmented the barrens, yet it also gained cultural importance through the Rapp Road community and archaeological links to its frontier past. Today it is valued as a major environmental, historical, and cultural landmark and habitat for the endangered Karner blue butterfly.
