Lake Albany was a prehistoric proglacial lake that filled the Hudson Valley in eastern New York near the end of the Wisconsinan glaciation, formed when meltwater from a retreating glacier and rivers including the Iromohawk was trapped behind ice. Extending about 160 miles from present-day Poughkeepsie to Glens Falls, it existed roughly between 15,000 and 12,600 years ago and drained around 10,500 years ago through the Hudson River as post-glacial rebound changed the landscape. Its retreat left sandy and gravelly plains, lake-bottom silts and clays, and drainage patterns that helped create streams in and around Colonie and underlie the Albany Pine Bush.
