In the spring of 1849, caravans of gold seekers in the Rush for California traveled this trail under military escort commanded by Capt. R.B. Marcy. The route lay west from Ft. Smith along the south side of the Arkansas and Canadian rivers across Oklahoma, and a campground and spring three miles west were well known on this famous trail.
