Shakamak State Park in southwestern Indiana grew from donated county land into a heavily visited recreation area known especially for fishing, as well as swimming, boating, hiking, camping, and cabins. Dedicated in 1928, it took a name said to mean “river of the long fish,” referring to nearby Eel River. Its defining lakes were man-made, beginning with the first created by blocking a sewer and later expanded with others, including Lake Kickapoo. Bass stocked in 1930 helped establish its angling reputation by 1932. Civilian Conservation Corps Company 522 shaped much of the park from 1933 to 1942, and the park became a National Register historic district in 2000.
