Near this site stood Westfield’s first permanent house of worship, the Presbyterian Church in Westfield, organized in 1728 and built in 1735. During the Revolution, its bell was rung to warn Patriots of the approach of the British. The enemy captured the bell and carried it to Staten Island, but it was recovered after the war and now hangs in the belfry of the present church.
