Milton State Park occupies an 82-acre island in the West Branch Susquehanna River at Milton, combining a developed day-use area with a wooded southern habitat for migrating birds and waterfowl. The island’s recorded history began in 1762 with Marcus Huling Jr.’s claim and apple orchard. In 1824 the Straub family built a dam, ran a sawmill and gristmill, and connected the island by bridge. After milling and later farming declined, the island was used for picnics and athletic fields. Consolidated and transferred to Pennsylvania in 1966, it was devastated by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, then rebuilt as a park that reflects both the area’s working past and recreational life.
