Grist Mill Process
Industry
2
The Groff, Stauffer, Binkley Mill was most likely steam powered, but many local mills were run by a water stream's flow and water pressure. Standard mill mechanisms included a grain bin, chute, elevator, grain feed, winnower, flour bin, head gear, overshot water wheel, millstones, cover, and grist hopper. Grist for the millstones included whole oats, wheat grain, dried corn, and rye seed. Two stones stood inside a cover skirt: the bottom stone remained still while the upper stone, called the runner, turned around, and flour fell out from the stones at the cover skirt. A quarter dress stone pattern is also shown.
