In 1868, downtown Watsonville saw a series of important beginnings: Watsonville was incorporated, James Waters and Jacob Blackburn established the first nursery, All Saints Episcopal Church was founded, the first wharf was built at the mouth of the Pájaro River, Stephen Gasper Martinelli founded Martinelli’s, and the Register-Pajarionian, Watsonville’s first newspaper and now its oldest business, made its debut. The Pajaronian began as a weekly newspaper published every Thursday, with subscriptions costing $5 a year in advance and single copies costing 12 ½ cents. In its first issue, a column titled “Where We Are” explained how to reach Watsonville before the railroad arrived in 1871: travelers from San Francisco took the cars to San José, then Conner’s line of stages along the line of the San José and Gilroy railroad, turning off at the 21 mile house to cross the Coast Range and descend to a summit view of the Pájaro Valley.
