The LDS Hawaii Mission School stood here, and on February 7, 1921, President David O. McKay, then a member of the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, witnessed a flag raising ceremony there. Seeing the multi-ethnic student body representing the peoples of the Pacific, Elder McKay was impressed by these young people's great need for education to enrich their own lives and bless the Church. That event became the catalyst for the Church College of Hawaii, now Brigham Young University - Hawaii. The school and its buildings were constructed about 1915, and operation of the school was transferred to the Territory of Hawaii in August 1927 before it was later moved to the site of Laie Elementary School.
