A Czech egg is a painted or embellished egg exchanged at holidays and celebrations between friends, and its painting is known in Czech culture as the art of kraslice. Traditionally, in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, formerly Czechoslovakia before their separation in 1992, eggs were exchanged during Easter as a symbol of new beginnings, love, friendship, and good things to come. During the 1870's, many Bohemian and Moravian immigrants from Czechoslovakia settled in and around Wilson, Kansas, where many Czech families still live and continue Czech traditions. Czech heritage influences many aspects of life in Wilson, including food, art, music, and business, and in 1967 the State of Kansas declared Wilson the Czech Capital of Kansas. Wilson celebrates this heritage with activities throughout the year, including the annual After Harvest Czech Festival held the last Saturday in July. From 1960 to 1990, Czechoslovakia had a communist regime, and in 1961 the red star of Communism replaced the crown above the Bohemian lion; after the fall of Communism in 1989, traditional heraldry was reinstated, new national arms quartering the arms of Bohemia and Slovakia were designed, and these remained valid until Czechoslovakia was dissolved in 1992. The current coat of arms of the Czech Republic, adopted in 1992 and designed by Czech heraldist Jiří Louda, displays the three historical regions of the Czech lands: Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. In Czech culture, an eight-pointed star traditionally signifies the belief that with every birth a star is born and connected to that person's life as a guardian, and stars in Czech art have an even number of points for good luck. On the egg, red signifies health, joy, and happiness; yellow, good fortune; black, eternity and respect for souls; and white, purity and birth. The egg was painted by more than 50 local volunteers with more than 2000 hours of work and was designed and signed by local Czech egg artist Christine Slechta.
