Spring Gap Mountain is a ridge in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle that runs through Morgan and Hampshire counties, rising to 2,237 feet north of the gap that gives it its name. Spring Gap is also the source of Dug Hill Run, a tributary of the Little Cacapon River, which meanders along the mountain’s western flank. The ridge extends from north of Slanesville to south of West Virginia Route 9 near Paw Paw. It is also tied to colonial frontier history: during the French and Indian War, Major General Edward Braddock’s march from Winchester to Cumberland crossed the mountain, where his men camped because Spring Gap provided abundant fresh water.
