The world's first transcontinental railroad in the U.S. was built from 1863 to 1869 and connected Sacramento, California, to Omaha, Nebraska. Although some parts of the original line were rerouted or abandoned, much of it is now used by Amtrak's California Zephyr. The Milwaukee District West Line also has a long history. Construction began on July 10th, 1872, when it was known as the Chicago & Pacific Railraod. It was built for both commuter and freight trains. In 1874, four round trips from Chicago to Elgin were offered daily, and a one way ticket cost $1.25. Today, more than 20 trips run from Chicago to Elgin, and the train also stops in Franklin Park.
