Built in 1895 at 530 Edgewood Place in River Forest, Illinois, the Chauncey L. Williams Residence is an early Frank Lloyd Wright house in Roman brick and plaster and among his earliest Chicago-area commissions. Its importance also lies in Wright’s friendship with Chauncey L. Williams, a University of Wisconsin classmate whose literary and cultural interests paralleled Wright’s own. Williams, from a wealthy Midwestern family, also helped form the Way and Williams publishing firm with W. Irving Way. The house is especially notable for reflecting Japanese design influences that were becoming an important part of Wright’s developing architectural style.
