Emma Wood State Beach in Ventura occupies a narrow strip along the Santa Barbara Channel beside the Ventura River estuary, between the ocean and a major rail and highway corridor. Named for Emma Grubb Wood, it grew from land tied to the Taylor Ranch, later donated in part to California by her husband, Adrian “Buddy” Wood, and opened as a state beach in 1957. Beyond recreation, the area includes dunes, flood plain, cobblestone beach, riparian woodland, wetlands, and estuary habitat rich in plant and bird life. It also preserves remains of two 1942 artillery installations built for coastal defense during World War II.
