The Horse-Shoe Trail is a 140-mile route across southeastern Pennsylvania for hiking and horseback riding, linking Valley Forge National Park with the Appalachian Trail near Harrisburg. Created through the efforts of the Horse-Shoe Trail Club, founded in 1935, it was formally named in 1947 and deliberately routed through farmlands, historic places, parks, and wooded sections, including Revolutionary War landscapes. Its course ranges from gently rolling agricultural country to a rugged western stretch with rocky climbs over Second Mountain and Sharp Mountain. The trail is notable for connecting historic sites, public lands, and private property in a single corridor through a lived-in landscape.
