Five local servicemen gave their lives in World War II in what is called the cause of all freedoms. George M. Gooch, born April 23, 1919, was an Electrician's Mate Third Class aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma and died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Harold Lloyd Head, born October 10, 1921, was a Seaman Second Class aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma and also died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Eugene C. Gooch, born July 15, 1913, was a Private First Class in the 47th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division and died at Saint Lo, France, on July 25, 1944. Marlin Smith, born September 10, 1918, was a Private First Class in Troop C, 7th Cavalry Division and died at Leyte, Philippines, on November 1, 1944. Gay Mitchell, Jr., born July 23, 1920, was a Technician Third Grade in the 3rd Reconnaissance, 3rd Armored Division and died at Stolberg, Germany, on November 20, 1944. Robert S. Taylor, born January 31, 1920, was a Water Tender Second Class aboard the U.S.S. Caffin Young and died at sea near Okinawa on July 31, 1945.
