Putoff Canyon was named for an early settler, Mr. Putoff. In the Salt Water region, the canyon was noted for its freshwater spring, said to be strong enough to swim a horse. From 1900 to 1914, the area was a resort for many artists. Western writer Zane Grey used the region as the setting for his novel "The Thundering Herd".
