The site was dedicated in tribute to Scott Joplin, who lived from 1868 to 1917, and to John Stark, who lived from 1841 to 1927 and published The Maple Leaf Rag and other Sedalia ragtimers. It is identified as the cradle of the classic rags and also honors Arthur Marshall and Scott Hayden.
