Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland, Washington, grew from Hulda Klager’s lilac hybridizing work, begun in 1905 after inspiration from Luther Burbank. Her experiments succeeded quickly, producing 14 new varieties by 1910, and she opened the display to visitors each spring starting in 1920. Over time she developed more than 250 varieties, making the site an important historic center of regional lilac breeding. Flooding in 1948 destroyed much of the planting, but supporters helped replant the grounds from Klager’s own stock, allowing the garden to reopen by 1950. Preserved after her death, it now operates as a nonprofit botanical garden known for Lilac Days.
