Constructed in 1912, the Walters Building originally housed Walter's Dry Goods on the ground level and Fountaine Hall upstairs. Fountaine Hall hosted the Masons and also a play house of questionable character. The building stands on what is known as "dead man's corner," where at least 2 fatal gunfights occurred. The apparel, jewelry, and cosmetics business had been founded in 1867 in Woolum in Searcy County, moved to Bellefonte in 1897, and eventually relocated to Harrison. A 1936 newspaper advertisement declared, "If it is new you will find it at Walters. Remember when you need good merchandise at prices you like to pay try this old firm."
