Oneonta Gorge in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge is a narrow basalt chasm formed in rock about 25 million years old and known for four major waterfalls along Oneonta Creek: Lower, Middle, Upper, and Triple falls. Designated by the U.S. Forest Service as a botanical area, it supports unusual aquatic and woodland species, with damp walls covered in ferns, mosses, hepatics, and lichens, along with about 50 species of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. Its lower slot canyon long drew visitors willing to wade upstream for a view of Lower Oneonta Falls. The gorge was first photographed by Carleton Emmons Watkins, who named it after his hometown of Oneonta, New York.
