Built around 1851 in East Montpelier, Vermont, Coburn Covered Bridge carries Coburn Road across the Winooski River and is the town’s only surviving covered bridge from the 19th century. The single-span queenpost truss, reinforced with embedded iron rods, rests on concrete and stone abutments and preserves its historic appearance with vertically boarded side walls, fully sheathed portals, and segmented-arch openings. Though the deck was modified in the 1970s with steel beams and a concrete floor to support the roadway, the bridge remains an important historic structure. Its age and rarity led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
