Martin Covered Bridge in southern Marshfield, Vermont, spans the Winooski River near Plainfield and is the town’s only surviving historic covered bridge. Built around 1890 by local bridgewright Herman F. Townsend, it is unusual as one of the few surviving 19th-century Vermont covered bridges originally built for a private farm road instead of a public highway. The small wooden bridge is a single-span queenpost truss with a gabled roof, vertical board siding, dry-laid stone abutments, and iron rod reinforcement. Now open only to pedestrians, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 for both its craftsmanship and rarity.
