Waterman Mountain, an 8,041-foot summit in Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains, stands within Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Forming the northern boundary and highest point of the San Gabriel Wilderness, it is known for broad prominence, seasonal snow, mixed conifer forest, and recreation, with ski areas and campgrounds nearby. The mountain was named for Robert B. Waterman, a pioneer mountain man and ranger. In May 1889, Robert and Liz Waterman and Perry Switzer completed a three-week crossing of the San Gabriels; Liz became the first known non-Indigenous woman to do so. Despite severe effects from the 2009 Station Fire, the mountain remains an important summit.
