Mount Islip, an 8,250-foot peak in Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains within Angeles National Forest, is known for broad views that can reach from the Mojave Desert across the Los Angeles Basin to Santa Catalina Island and San Clemente Island. Named for homesteader George Islip, who lived nearby in the late 19th century, the mountain also reflects the region’s forest fire lookout era. A steel lookout tower built there in 1927 is gone, but a rock cabin from the site remains near the summit. Today, Mount Islip is a popular hiking destination valued for both its scenery and its link to that earlier landscape history.
