The oldest portion of Old Newton Burial Ground was dedicated in 1762 as part of the Town Plot and was enlarged about 1820. In 1837, Job S. Halsted donated 3/5 acre to the Presbyterian Church, and the burial ground was enclosed by a wall that same year. By 1876, burials there were estimated at 5000, including many of the county's earliest settlers.
