Two Creeks Buried Forest State Natural Area preserves a Lake Michigan lakeshore bluff north of Two Creeks, Wisconsin, where the buried remains of an ancient forest are periodically exposed between two layers of glacial till. Stumps, logs, branches, pine needles, pinecones, moss, and other litter have made the site a key reference point for Great Lakes geochronology, helping establish the sequence of glacier advances and retreats during the last glacial period. Dating places the forest at about 13,760 to 13,530 calibrated years before present, and evidence shows it stood for at least 329 years before cooling returned, water levels rose, and the forest was flooded, buried, and covered by new till.
