Two Louisiana governors were born nearby: William W. Heard, who served from 1900 to 1904, and Ruffin G. Pleasant, who served from 1916 to 1920. A post office was established in 1851 and discontinued in 1906. The community was also the site of Concord Institute, a Baptist college, circa 1877 to 1884.
