Sommers–Bausch Observatory on the University of Colorado Boulder campus developed from a 1949 bequest honoring Elmer E. Sommers and was completed in 1953 after Korean War shortages delayed construction. Designed to match campus architecture, it became both a teaching observatory and a site for research, with classrooms, labs, and computing space. Its equipment evolved from a 10-inch refractor to a 24-inch reflector, later joined by a heliostat and modern teaching telescopes. Additions and renovations in 1981, 1986, 1989, 1997, and 2017 expanded its facilities, introduced early CCD imaging, strengthened undergraduate instruction, and supported public open houses and major skywatching events.
