The Purple Heart is this nation’s oldest military decoration and is dedicated to those who received it. The inscription presents it as a red stone for the blood they shed and the medal as the country’s way of showing it cares, expressing the hope that if it could be seen by all mankind, peace might come in the speaker’s lifetime. It was erected by Thomas E. McCall Chapter #1922 M.O.P.H. in memory of William S. Kerlin of World War II, Carroll County, and includes the line, “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers for he to-day who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother,” along with the names and service of Fred Priest, U.S.N., World War II and Korea; Clarence Minnear, Army, World War II; James Logsdon, Army, Vietnam; Bob Schoonover, Army, Korea; and Harold Trout, U.S.M.C., World War II.
