In Coventry, Connecticut, this museum centers on the state’s nineteenth-century glass industry in the 1813 Captain John Turner House, whose namesake was among the first owners of the local factory. Coventry’s glassmaking industry operated from about 1814 to 1848, and the nearby factory foundation and Turner House remain important survivors in the National Historic Glass Factory District. The museum also conducts archaeological excavation in the adjoining cornfield, where glass shards from the original glasshouse were spread by early owner Rufus Chamberlain. Beyond Coventry, it studies and preserves the history of other Connecticut glassworks while restoring the Turner House and developing a solar-based glassmaking operation called Sun-Fired Glass.
