This Art Moderne red brick building, built by the WPA as Florence's Town Hall and Community Center, was designed by architect Max Hanisch Sr. of Unit Structures with massive arched glued and laminated wood beams, and Carl Anderson served as local project supervisor. Florence paid $9000 and the WPA paid $21000 for its construction, and its first activities were the County Fair and elections. In the 1940s it became a factory for war-effort uniforms and tents, in the 1950s it housed Zenith TV cabinet production, and in the 1960s it housed Volta Co small electrical motor production. In the 1970s the Florence Mining News was produced there, and in the 1980s and 1990s four restaurants opened and closed there. In 2003 Don and Rachel Egelseer bought the building from the Florence State Bank, and after brick tuckpointing, roof work, and extensive interior restoration, Encore on Central—Nostalgic Ballroom opened for events along with a Health and Fitness Center offering year-round community recreation. The building was added to the Wisconsin Register on Aug. 23, 2013, and to the National Historic Register on April 15, 2014.
