Franconia Notch State Park is a 6,500 acre park often called the flagship of the New Hampshire state park system. Early settlers and travelers called this valley a mountainous defile, and today it is one of America's great parks, with some two million people from all over the world passing between these mountain walls each year. The Franconia Range lies to the east, while Cannon Mountain and the Kinsman Peaks stand to the west, and between them the valley holds many natural wonders, including the Old Man of the Mountain, Hawthorn's Great Stone Face, the Flume, the Pool, the Basin, and Echo, Profile, and Lonesome Lakes, all changed little by the hand of man. Visitors may camp, picnic, swim, fish, hike, ride the aerial tramway, photograph nature's bounty, or relax and enjoy the scenery, and in winter the slopes of Cannon Mountain offer some of the greatest skiing in the east.
