Flume Gorge is a natural chasm in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire, where Flume Brook carved an approximately 800-foot passage through Conway granite at the base of Mount Liberty. Its rock walls rise about 70 to 90 feet and narrow to just 12 to 20 feet apart in places, creating its dramatic, compressed shape. Discovered in 1808 by 93-year-old “Aunt” Jess Guernsey, it became one of Franconia Notch’s notable natural sights. The gorge remains one of the best-known features of the state park, valued for its sheer walls, flowing water, and intimate view of the White Mountains’ granite landscape.
