Mount Pemigewasset, or Indian Head, is a 2,530-foot mountain in Franconia Notch whose best-known feature is a granite cliff near the summit that resembles a human profile from the proper angle. Known since the early 19th century, the likeness became fully visible again after a 1901 forest fire cleared trees that had obscured part of it. The profile, shaped over time as water froze and expanded in cracks in the granite, links the mountain to both natural history and local tradition. Its name comes from an Abenaki word, and the mountain remains a noted scenic landmark and one of the White Mountains’ surviving profile-like formations.
