The Viaduct

The Viaduct stands on South Main Street at the edge of downtown Mount Vernon, spanning the Kokosing River. Built in 1892 and rehabilitated in 1969, the stone arch viaduct replaced a wooden bridge that had suffered years of damage from the elements. At thirty years old, it passed its ultimate test by withstanding the ravages of the great flood of 1913. Strategically located at the south edge of downtown Mount Vernon, it has historically carried merging northbound traffic from as many as four major state highways and now provides safe passage over the Kokosing River for more than twenty thousand vehicles per day.
