Acona Methodist Church was built on three acres of land purchased in 1874 from Mrs. A.T. Landfair for $25. Lumber for the building was shipped by rail from Tennessee to Vaiden, then hauled to Acona by wagon. The church was erected by John Hamilton, and the Building Committee included Jordan Bailey, John Hamilton, and J.S. Herbert. By 1875, the church had 86 members, and the building was jointly owned and used by the church and the Grange. Early church officials included Pastor K.A. Jones; trustees D.T. Johnson, B.H. McGee, and J.M. Johnson; and stewards J.M. Johnson, P.M. Diggs, and J.S. Herbert. John William Bailey served as superintendent of the Sunday School for thirty five years. The first Bible teacher was Rev. Thomas Newell, and Miss Mary Jane McGee was president of the Woman's Society.
